Custom development services we offer

As an application development company based in Durban we naturally love our city and fellow Durbanites, but we definitely don’t limit ourselves to our geo-location. We have long-standing relationships with clients around the world. Our custom software development projects take on many forms, depending on the client and/or the project’s exact requirements to make it tick, and more importantly, to ensure a successful rollout.

One system, several surfaces

Custom software rarely stops at one platform. A web application needs a mobile counterpart in the field. A desktop client for the people doing the heavy work reports into the same database. An API ties all of it to the systems you already run. We build these as one system rather than three projects.

1
01Foundation

A shared back end

One data model and one set of business rules, so every app behaves the same way and changes are made once.

02Data

One source of truth

Reports, invoices and records all come from the same place, with nothing re-keyed between systems.

03Scope

Only the front ends you need

We decide early which surfaces the work needs, because retrofitting a second one onto a system that never expected it is where budgets go.

Straight answers before we write any code

01 · Before we quote

Do you need custom software at all?

Custom software is the right answer less often than software companies like to admit. So we check first:

  • 1
Does something on the market already do the job?If it does, we’ll help you choose it and get onto it properly.
  • 2
Which part is unique to how you work? That part, and only that part, is a candidate for a build.
  • ✓
A straight recommendationBuy, build, or a bit of both.

It costs us a project now and again. It also means that when we tell you a build is justified, you can believe us.

02 · The size of the build

The application is usually smaller than you think

Example: a business with its own way of billing

The instinct is to commission accounting software. The better build is a small application that does exactly the bespoke part, integrated into a platform that already does the rest properly. Smaller build, lower cost, less to maintain. Working out where that line falls is most of what discovery is for.

How a custom software project generally runs here at Epicdev

Every estimate we give depends on the first two steps being done properly, which is why they come before any development is commissioned.

  1. DiscoveryWhat the software has to do, who uses it, what it connects to, and what happens if it goes down.
  2. Prototype & specificationA working prototype and a written spec covering architecture, stack and scope.
  3. UI/UX developmentInterface and flow, designed against the prototype.
  4. Back-end developmentData model, business logic, integrations and APIs.
  5. Quality assuranceTested against the spec, on the platforms it will actually run on.
  6. DeploymentInto your environment or ours, cloud or self-managed.
  7. Support under SLAEngineering after launch, not just hosting, with agreed response times.

What working with us looks like

Flexible on technology. We’re not tied to one language, framework or platform. We choose the technology that fits your project, your team and the systems you already run.

  • You get a technical specification and prototype before you commit to the build.
  • We sign your NDA before you share the details of your idea.
  • Payment plans and options structured to suit your project.
  • One team from discovery to support, working as an extension of yours.
  • Ongoing support under a service level agreement, from the people who built it.

Our software development requirements are always unique and challenging so it is important to deal with a team that will provide sound advice and guidance, as well as have the skills to implement. The Epicdev team provide us with all of these factors, allowing us to focus on what is core to our business.

A custom development project in focus

One system, from the first discovery session to software a whole team relies on every day.

Event guests checking in with event software

Desktop & mobile apps · Events

1,000+events run on the software we built

Event check-in and badge printing software

The challenge
A national events company needed hundreds of guests checked in fast and badged on the spot, at venues where the Wi-Fi can’t be trusted.
What we built
A desktop event management app, self check-in kiosks, mobile check-in for staff, on-demand badge printing and live attendance reporting, all on one platform.
The result
More than 1,000 events run on it since 2014, from boardroom sessions to conferences of 5,000+ delegates.

Custom software development: common questions

Still wondering about something?

Ask us directly
How much does custom software development cost?

It depends on what the software has to do, how many platforms it runs on and what it connects to. After discovery we write a technical specification and quote against it, so the price is based on the actual scope rather than a guess. We can also structure payment plans around the project.

Timelines depend on scope. A focused application takes far less time than a multi-platform system, and larger projects are usually released in stages so you get working software sooner. The technical specification sets out the timeline before the build starts.

Yes. We will happily sign your NDA before you share the details of your idea.

Usually, yes. Most of what we build connects to existing accounting, CRM, payment or industry platforms through their APIs, so your new software handles the bespoke part and established tools handle the rest.

Every project can move onto a support agreement under a service level agreement, covering response times, maintenance, security updates and new features, handled by the team that built it.
